Let's just call it an innocent start to my day. I went to work yesterday, grabbed some hot apple cider and cookies to share with the staff and was making a phone call while there to let my coworkers know that I wished to share some holiday cheer with them. As I was on the phone, I gazed downward
only to discover I had put on one black boot and one brown boot.
I screamed. I could not believe I...me...the shoe person...the DNR president...OMG.
I have to say, it brought on some good laughs and before long the clinic was informed of my mistake. Pictures were taken. Offers to make a brown and black bracelet to match were made. And I went the full 12+ hour shift with mismatched boots.
Don't get me wrong. I made every attempt to make changes. I actually have a spare pair of shoes at work, bummer, at the other clinic. I thought about wearing someones snow boots. No. To my surprise, there are not a lot of other people in the world who look down at people's shoes so none of my patients noticed...or they may just not have said anything and just left the clinic being very unsure about their diagnosis from the crazy lady with one brown and one black boot! I did call Todd who had already started his Christmas break. He went into my closet and began to describe the different kinds of black boots I have...didn't know I had that many!...Is it this with the pointed toe? With the midcalf length? with the thick heel? no,no,no...finally he found it but claims he ran out of time. From the laughter that followed, I think not.
So the day went pretty smooth except for that minor problem and I was on my way home. I began to get excited that is was nearing Christmas day. I recalled looking at a photo earlier in the day on my desk of Jordan and I when I was 8 and 1/2 months pregnant. We had gone to Portraits Today to have some professional photos taken. I really cherish them. Jordan is kissing my pregnant belly in a lot of them.
My pregnancies were pretty easy. Except for some back pain and sleepless nights, I rarely felt sick...usually a quick 4:00 pm reminder for about 5 minutes. And I must remember that with my first pregnancy, I was in denial for about half of it. I looked like I was carrying a basketball in my belly and was able to run til the day of delivery. But that day was rough was my first. Doc had stripped my membrane in the morning. Went for a little run to get things going. Then it was off to work. Toward the evening, I started to contract. So in between patients, I would come out of the room, lean over the desk, my nurse Sharon would rub my back and I would do some breathing. I only had one more to see and he was a guy complaining of pain. You can imagine my response, of course, professional. I actually needed to send him off to cat scan and called the doc on call to take over for results. I then drove home. On my way, I pulled over to throw up my tomato soup I had for dinner. When I got home, I told Todd I thought this was it. Called the hospital who asked me how far apart...I don't know, I'll call you back...since it was not a minute later that I got another (though I didn't time it) called back and told them I was on my way. It seemed that we found a very bumpy road on the way in. It was the way we always took but I had never noticed how bumpy it was. Me, wanting to be the hero, decided to do things naturally. Back labor...intense...Todd was left with little arm hair left as the only relief was a blazing hot shower as he massaged my back. The next day at 5 am Jordan arrived with a little help from suction. Beautiful, perfect 8 lbs, 3 oz...it is amazing that anyone can see that beauty in spite of the blood and coning of the head from the journey through the birth canal. I had lost a fair amount of blood, about 2-3 pints though doc decided I could build that back up on my own...something I would not advise others to do who wish to breast feed. I was able to breast feed Jordan for 9 months but that first week I probably had starved him a little.
So all of that on my ride home...seems like yesterday though it was almost 9 years ago. And why was I thinking about that? I honestly wonder how Mary did it. How could she ride on a camel through the desert? Was she is labor? Did she thrown up? Was she exhausted? Was Jesus colicky? And if so, I hope they had chiropractors back then!
Well, Merry Christmas to you all! Jesus is the reason for this season.
Love to you,
Paula

Please don't tease me!
I have loved being involved in the shoe hunt the last few years. I have been able to express my passion for shoes. As a result, I actually have been given some free shoes! Certainly, I did not intend for this to happen. Last year when the snow storm hit and several could not show for the party, a very kind friend, Michelle Lemler, gave me her boots that she had purchased. She just felt she would never wear them. A very nice pair- kind of an alligator skin, mid calf- browns/black. I also have a mother-in-law, Pat Poch, who enjoys high end comfortable shoes but her feet can be pretty particular about what they deem as comfortable so i have inherited several pairs- some tennis, some loafers. And lastly was this year when I received a beautiful pair of mid calf light brown tastefully worn looking boots from Tanya Rolf. Now this is a woman who has been kind enough to pass along several tops to me that she felt did not look perfect on her (she's gorgeous and looks good in anything so I am not sure what she found wrong with them!) but these boots were luckily bought even though they were too big. She is one of those Ladies! Yes, start bitching now...she is a size 6 and 1/2! You know what I am talking about....those women...the ones who wear a size 6 and 1/2...the ones who get all of the great deals because all that is left on the shelves of clearance racks are size 6 and 1/2....oh, and 11 but those women I just feel sorry for. So, as she was coming into the party she passed these awesome boots over to me.
Well, you all know the events of the party so I won't review but as the party came to an end, we all decided to carry it on at the Luxury Box. I decided to join them. I totally wanted to get out of my shoes...no,no,no- remember my feet did not hurt in 5 inch pumps. So I decided to put on the boots. The Luxury box was fun- lots of dancing! Thanks gals, I love to dance! So finally the night came to an end and I headed home.
When I got home, I immediately got ready for bed and took off the boots. OK, I tried to take off the boots. I really struggled...I didn't drink anything at the bar besides water so it wasn't the wine talking. I was confused as to why it was so hard but finally they came off. I looked at the size...7 and 1/2. Now I am size 8 and 1/2 mostly 9. Wow! How did I do that? Though I think from the looks on my feet they were asking me why did I do that?!?!
Not only that but a week later when I tried them on again just to make sure cause these boots are just so cute and the size could be wrong, right? Well, I found a business card of Mike Rolf's in them so not only were they at least a full size small but they had cardboard in them!
I keep looking at them in my closet thinking they are mine but I am ready now to give them to someone who can fit in them. I was teased into thinking these could be mine- I know totally unintentionally- and I really find the whole thing completely hilarious... My desperation for the perfect pair of shoes. And, I will continue to take whatever hand me downs Tanya gives me for she has impeccable taste.
Free boots to size 7 and 1/2. And in case anyone else wishes to donate to the cause...for me that is...size 8 and 1/2, sometimes 9!!!!!
Peace
Paula

Vacation
I am in Hilton Head, South Carolina right now. I am at a conference. It is hosted by the National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine. It's titled the Psychology of Health, Immunity, and Disease. I am surrounded by experts in the field of mind, body, and spirit medicine. If you know me, my mind right now is both at peace as well as swirling with ideas. I have been lucky enough to both enjoy the talks as well as the outside environment. With my attraction to all elements- air, fire, water- I am lucky to be by the ocean and hear the splashing of the waves against the shoreline. I was especially thrilled to walk tonight as the sun was setting with the moon dancing over the water on the opposite side.
One of the sessions I attended today was by a man Norm Shealy, MD, PhD. His workshop was on Synchronicity and Simultaneity of Thought. He started out talking about how he has "someone" (he calls a guider) that he talks to and talks back to him. Now call me a Midwesterner or a skeptic but i said "a quack". I love, however, when I am proven wrong. So then he talks about when things just disappear before his eyes...I remembered by cell phone being gone last week...he said that was God's reminder that things are not our reality. He took us through some acupressure points and followed this with a mediation following those same points. I struggled...my mind was racing...suddenly, peace...and I so badly wanted the pain in my back right around my scapula to go away...it did...but now it was in my arm...so after another series of meditations, that was gone too. And it still is not back- it's been there for 6 months.
Lastly, he talked about intuition. I've known this fact for a long time...we all have it. I know mine comes through...or should I say, I acknowledge it so much more when I am relaxed.
It reminded me of this one time, and I know some of you have heard this before but here goes...I woke up one morning just like any other, maybe about a year ago. There was a slight chill in the air so I headed to the closet to get my slippers. As I entered the closet, I thought to myself "I hope that if Jeff and/or Jacci (neighbor's of ours) ever have a medical emergency, that they know to call on me..and, of course, call 911. I thought it was weird that i had that thought and dismissed it as "morbid". A short time later, I was walking through our living room. I remember the front door being open though the screen door was closed. It was getting warmer outside. I heard sirens...that's pretty weird out by us in the secluded country side we live in. They got closer and as they did, my husband went outside to investigate. He said, " The ambulance is right there and it is turning into Jeff and Jacci's driveway."
I freaked.
Now I have had several episodes of "hmmmm, that's ironic. I just thought that." But never did it seem so obvious to me.
I ran to my closet to get my shoes when my husband said " oh, they are parked there but they went across the road to the neighbors. it looks like they have a silo fire."
And sure enough, that is what it was.
Now, that being said, I was still freaked. And what do most girls do when they are freaked like this? Call their sister. So I did. Shelly confirmed it was intuition and said I should go to church that day.
Luckily, it was Sunday and i left for church. I desperately listened to Pastor Matt expecting that through his words God would tell me why this happened...why it was so obvious. But, though his words were wonderful as always, nothing I heard explained this.
So I askedin prayer... And I heard a response. I am telling you. ..I have went to Catholic school for at least 5 years. I have been at church more times than I can count. I have prayed. I have heard other people say God has spoken to them. Not me...until then. And so clearly I heard this after I asked why...
"Because I want you to believe in what you are doing and who you are."
I can't tell you what the voice sounded like. I know it wasn't like a Sidney Poitier voice over, though that would have been nice. It was just there. As simple as that.
And why did that happen? I don't know. I've tried to talk to Him again. I'm sure He responds but I haven't heard it again. I'm just happy I had it happen once.
And I know maybe what some of you are thinking right now...she's a quack cause I have thought it myself but I am telling you, I'm not. Just like Norm Shealy is not (though I have to say, I don't have a "guide" that I talk to on a regualr basis besides God).
I guess maybe that is what a vacation can do. It can help with reflection, relaxation, and releasing energy. Or maybe it was the glass of wine Jeremy from Jamaica poured me while I devoured a crab cake at the local hotel bar.
If any of you have intuitions about next year's Shoe party...thoughts, suggestions, premonitions about the weather, please let me know. I would love to tap into your insight!
Namaste,
Paula

What a success!
Wow! What a great time! Saturday's gathering was so fun much. Though the weather looked frightful in the morning, it cleared up nicely leaving us with some freezing temps. I thank you for coming out despite the cold.
First and foremost, Kathy Buechel and Shelly Waala were hugely instrumently in planning the perfect night. Thanks to these 2 very special people.
Imagine Coffee shop provided the comfort and coziness...and great food, did I not tell you that!?! Lisa and Rick were generous in allowing us to take over for the night. Jeff and Mike from Spirits on Main helped greatly with wine and beer set up and take down...and super selections! The baskets were a huge hit. We had 17 which I would say varied in value from $50 to Priceless. The purse idea was a hit. We had so many to choose from. And those beautiful bracelet donations!
Jillian Clark was kind enough to tell us about Chix For A Cause. She is the founder. In the last 6 months alone, they have given out over $10,000 in Gifts of Love! Not only is she the founder, she is a gifted singer/song writer. She sang "Whatever It Takes" and several other orginal hits.
By the sound of the crowd, you would have thought the party was attended by 100 women. No, the women that were there were just ready to chat with one another. And, you know Ladies, that is what this night was all about! I was overjoyed to hear the interactions!
We gave out some awards. Best Shoes- Julie Bernarde- red, gold, and fur all in one! Best Accessory- Kathy Buechel- a lavishing multistring of silver. Best Deal- Micky Surprenant- despite the fact her husband is not fond, we were impressed with her vintage jacket find. Best Story- Paula Carlton- a re-enactment of those interesting deer hunting shows.
I can't tell you enough...I loved it! I had such a fabulous time! I hope you all did too. Check back soon for some pictures to be added to the site.
And as some of you may have noticed, I like telling stories. I will continue to write throughout the year until the next season rolls around.
Peace,
Paula

I found my cell phone. Well, my husband did! It was in my purse- that damn thing is so big. I swear it wasn't there yesterday. I really think God put it there! So call away....though i may not answer if it is the bottomless pit!

It's the Final Countdown!
First off, I have to get something off my chest. I cannot find my cell phone. Now, to many of you, this does not surprise you. I have lost it on several occasions. I usually let it run low on the battery. Or I just don't acknowledge I own one. But I really need it this week. We are making final preparations for the event on Saturday so for those of you trying to call me on it, try my home number! I really wish there was a way I could get addicted to using my cell. I have caught on to other technology quite nicely. I love surfing the web. I am so addicted to my reunion web site right now. I love email. There is just something about talking on the phone. I even got commended the other day by a friend who called our home. i was on the other line talking with someone and heard the infamous "beep" indicating another caller. I just cannot do that..."hey, wait a minute, I got another call." So I didn't. When this person called back later, he was impressed.
So addicted to my phone. I don't see it happening but if God knows where it is right now, I would love for Him to conveniently place it in a spot where I can find it!
I know one thing my family thinks I may be addicted to right now. Turning off the lights. Why does this happen? All of a sudden you hit a certain age and you like your house spotless and any light turned off in a room that is not being used? And, what all of a sudden happens to boys/men who need to enter every room, turn all the lights in the room on, then leave the room? I stayed home with my boys much of the weekend as my husband was hunting and I think I spent the majority of the day straightening and darkening. What I waste in heat as I am chronically chilled, I make up for in conserving light. I think I feel that if a room is dark, it is "finished". It is usually tidy, not being used. If you have a boy in a room with lights on, it is being used and used=not tidy.
The absolute exception to this is shopping. It brings me peace and joy to see a room fully lite with perfection displaying beautiful things with such organization...and this is why I usually don't take my boys along. Though I love spending as much time with them as I can, I respect my times of peace.
The other day our boys had a friend over. We decided to go to a movie. Before the movie, I decided to take them to the Kewaskum Craft Show. I wanted to stop by the event hosted by the Kewaskum Jr. Women's Club. They are such a great organization and Kelly, the President, is a wonderful friend. While I quickly went through the craft items, I would let the boys eat as they also had a lunch. As we walked in, I sensed a bit of "excitement" from the boys. As I talked to Kelly to simply check in, the boys were seeing just how fast they could spin the door raffle bin. As it went faster, it jumped off the device it was attached to and went screaming down the hallway. Shopping just isn't in their blood. I'm way too laid back to get upset. The boys were pretty quite thereafter and didn't touch a thing while we were in there.
So boys are best away from the malls. Which brings us full circle back to the Shoe Hunt idea! The hunting season has officially closed. I hope you all were successful. I know the group that my husband hunts with (though not all of the 10 days) managed to kill about 25 deer. You know what? I think some of us would be able to top that, certainly as our group comes together we will find out!
Shoes, shoes. What is it about shoes? Shoes really symbolizes so much to me. They are a part of my comfort. They help me stand tall. They individualize who I am. They ground me. They each need a partner, who seem the exact same but are really very opposite. And the next step...they will now be collected together as we wear them on Saturday to "stand up to cancer".
Peace,
Paula

The similarities are frightening!
The 2008 gun deer hunting season is well underway...as is the shoe hunting season. The stories are flying. The similarities are amazing! Let me just tell you the ones I know so far:
1. I am not sure the exact time deer hunting opened on Saturday, the official opening day. I know the sun has been rising at a couple minutes before 7 am. So that being said, the opening time was right around there. My husband hunts about 20 minutes from our house. The alarm was set for 3:50 am (that is not a typo). The alarm, of course, never went off for Todd never really fell asleep. He was out in his stand, very easily by about 4:45 am just waiting...and waiting.
Friday is the infamous Black Friday or the Day after Thanksgiving sale. I have no doubt that many of you will be paging through um teen flyers after you have stuffed yourself with turkey and all the fixings. And I know many of you, if not all of you will be on your computers or standing in the lines at the stores hours before the store even opens. I know several women who wake at 4 am just to get those good deals when the doors fly open at 7am. So when you are standing in line, don't forget your foot warmers!
2. Everyone's style of hunting is different. My husband went out with our good friend Roger Peters. He also had a group of guys hunting together some private land mostly owned by organic farmer and friend K.T. My husband made a phone call midday whispering "I got a small one. it was wounded. I had to take him down." Rusty calls me looking for Todd later that day. "We got 11. 3 big bucks. 7 of them were shot by one guy." I know of several men who are lucky enough to have their own private land in Buffalo County (big buck country). Most have already been successful in their individual hunting sessions.
The girls' shoe hunting approach can be handled differently as well. Todd and Rog's hunt remind me of Ronda and Tanya's last year...they too went into some very public territory, well hunted and managed to find "wounded" though worth it shoes! And as far as hunting in a pack, I know a friend who will remain anonymous but it related to the hunter who shot 7 deer in one day. She, too, has found success by purchasing not 7 but 8 pairs of shoes in a very short period of time- I am sure any of us with extra tags will be more than happy to donate them to her. She is doing our economy some good after all, and that is what it is all about! And then there are those women who seem to have it all and get those winning shoes that no one else can find, let alone dream of having! I have a grand feeling that those girls from Buffalo county will be showing off some dandies! I can't wait to see those beauties.
3. I am competitive. I would love for my husband who has been hunting for 25 years to get a really nice buck. And I would love to get some really great pair of shoes. After all, I have been shopping since I was 3.
Peace,
Paula

Learning to breathe
I sit here in front of my latest shoe purchase. They kinda remind me of the eighties. Two lips designer. "Martini" is their name. Mary Jane style with a heel. Colors platinum, purple, and black- so that's the eighties part. If it's my unknowing intuition being right, maybe the eighties style is coming back so watch out and get the mega hold hairspray out! I love them. They certainly are different. To a hunter, they may be considered a nubby buck- good heel, intriguing...but not "it". I have been told by some very trendy ladies that maybe a skinny pant with some heel boots, a little fur thing around the top may be the way to go for me...I'll see. I'm a little nervous. I'll have to scope out the look. I am 37 after all...but you are right, not 73. I was behind a lady in line today who probably was 73 - she was telling the cashier she didn't need a gift receipt because what she was buying was all for her...no kidding- skinny pants, a big sweater, a big shiny purse, and some hoop earrings- what am I worried about?
Bunco night. I won $15... going to the shoe hunt! Oh my! Do we have a great auction item for you...what a fabulous art donation from Kelly Oppermann! OK, so I will tell you what I learned tonight because I always learn something.
1. Jill Luedtke does a nice job catering.
2. Jeff and Mike from Spirits on Main can pick out good wine when asked so don't search, just ask.
3. If you complete the survey online after a Bath and Body purchase, which takes a matter of 2 minutes, you get $10 off your next purchase!
4. Hi is Hi in german, Hallo= hello, guten tag= good day, guten nacht=good night (just a refresher on Deutsche as 2 are traveling there soon.)
5. When shopping at Walmart- yes, we all do at times, you have 2 choices for check out which can usually take as long as the actual shopping process. Self checkout- which never seems to work (though as a past employee of Fleet Farm, I would like to say I never seem to have a problem so this may be experience) but the problem comes from the placing of the items in or out of the bag, kids touching the bag area...lots of frustration...or the actual check out where it seems the cashier is often quite relaxed and I must now practice very deep breathing, laborious exercises since all too often i am 10 minutes behind where I should be.
6. Our husbands seem to have made everyone cook or make purchases today for their weekend hunting expedition- mine asked me to buy snickers and sliced ham.
7. If you wait for a trunk show at Koehn and Koehn, you can get the Pandora bracelet for free.
8. Some of our favorite stores are right here in West Bend- Serendipity, Savoring Thyme, Apple barrel...
9. We played 20 minutes of bunco which bet the 15 minutes of trap that guys usually play.
It's amazing what happens when a group of girls get together- we had some super ideas- I vaguely remember a suggestion...something about guys in chaps- must be nearing "Widow's Ball weekend"- have you ever been to one of those events? I wouldn't recommend it!
almost 2 weeks. These next 2 weeks are some of the biggest shopping weeks ever. I am not sure if it will require you to put your clothes outside for a week to "air out" or lather up with soap that makes you smell like, well, nothing...and luckily you will not be at risk for falling out of a tree stand or being hunting upon by someone who thinks because you are moving you must be a deer. But I would like to hear your stories of success when you get some! And feel free to carry on as...well, as you know who does.
Peace,
Paula

On a Mission
Prepare yourself. You have just sat down in front of your computer to check in on the blog. Excited to hear what may be new...well, I feel the need to tell you a story. It is a hunting story. No, no, no...you sit back down. Don't you dare change this page to something else. You must now do what I have had to do on numerous occasions...listen to a story that will take no doubt much longer than you could have imagined. But as a dutiful wife, I have to endure these stories...and because you are my friend, you must do the same.
I came home last night from a fun evening out with friends. After I settled the children to bed, I listened to the answering machine message. It was Roger Peters. He was leaving a message for Todd..."Todd, uh...I will try you on your cell phone. It's about that thing tomorrow."
Translation from the DNR Shoe president..."Todd, uh...I know your wife may not know about our hunting plans tomorrow so I will call you on your cell as I know I should not leave details for fear she may get upset."
True, there are plans to "scout" for the location of the deer hunting that will be taking place next week. Todd and Roger are going to head out to the Kettle Moraine. So after a busy morning of accomplishing one of the most grueling tasks Todd and I have partaken in together since marriage- installing kitchen cabinets- Roger is on his way over to go on this escapade. Todd has known Rog for a long time. He is usually a few minutes behind scheduled time. But this was a long time.
Finally Roger arrives. "Sorry I was late. I figured you'd understand." here's where the hunting story comes in. Was driving down my road...always wished i would see turkeys in this one field...thought they were turk vultures, binoculars...no, turkeys...wish i could....i can....went back home for gun...started through field...plowed field...deer out in front of me, plowing across the road, must of kicked 'em up...few times thought they spotted me...now in the dump part of the field...right next to washer and dryer..."Nice blind!" says Todd...up on my knee...shoot at the turk...jumps up into the air...follow with my gun...other turks look up to see what is going on...better shot at this one since I missed the other...down. Got 'em.
Now there were many other details I had missed and that is what the "...'s" are for.
I learn important lessons from these stories.
1. Take your time window shopping. What first may seem like a vulturous no-good deal, may turn out to be just what you were looking for.
2. You always have time to shoe hunt. Your friends, if true friends, will always wait.
3. Even when you feel like you are in a dump as in the instance of Rog hunting along side a washer and dryer that were dumped in the field, you may just find your prize. So don't be shy- you'd be amazed what I have found at those second hand stores!
4. And, as always, if first you don't succeed, Try, try again!
Try it the next time you have to listen to a hunting story...how does this apply to shopping? What valuable lesson might I learn?
Just to give you more of an idea as to who Roger Peters is, I thought I would include an email I received after last year's shoe hunt as a "Late Entry" (this is, of course, without Rog's permission. Sorry Rog. You understand.)
Dear Mrs. Carlton
I cannot remember the name of your group (New Freedom Maxi Club or New Rebellious Dixie Chicks or whatever it was) so I am sending this to you directly. I also realize it is too late for your "season", I did not apply for a permit, or even buy one of your licenses. But knowing who you are married to I don't think you can really judge me for "poaching" (Oh, by the way Ladies who are reading this, that is a whole nother story for another time so let me get back to Rog's note)...these beauties. Besides we all know the real deals are after the season right? So attached is a picture of my "kill shot". And here are the details on those bad boys:Size 13 (you need some room for thin socks), 18" tall (which makes the slot limit), in a beautiful forest green. Thought about going real tree camo but I like a more neutral boot myself. The solid green goes to every camo pattern to brush pants to Carhatt bibs. Nothing says dork like wearing real tree boots with advantage camo pants. Paalease, can you say tacky? They have the ATS traction soles which cut the mud like butter but don't clog up. They are scent free (smell like rubber to me but what the heck do I know, besides that just reminds me of Fleet Farm. Another hidden feature in these little gems, will it ever end, I think not!) They have an accordion type back with a cinch strap for a nice snug calf fit which also keeps debris from falling in and making a real mess on your pant legs.I could go on and on but you get the picture.
(Funny thing is, the letter doesn't end. As is typical of a hunter, the story continues and he does go on and on...)
These babies are loaded with features! They are not just a fashion/ style statement, they can literally walk the walk as they say. And oh yes, did I mention I got them for 30% off?! Going out of business sale. Sure, all sales are final and there are no returns, but I am sure you would agree, you would have to be an idiot to take something like this back.
So being a true hunter as I already was and now participating in your version of it, I have to be completely honest, while I enjoy the browsing, comparing, saving, and now bragging about my find (or kill as you might say), I'll still take the heart pounding, hands and voice shaking, adrenaline rush which ends with blood to your elbows and a gut pile at your feet over the store experience any day. But at least you made me think I was having a good time shopping. As good old Uncle Ted would say "Yah, let's go huntin' baby"! Hope you enjoyed my little rant.
Later,
Rog
(It didn't end yet...he has a P.S.)
P.S. I didn't even mention anything about the thinsulate. Can you think of a better material than that? Other than maybe Gore-tex. But that is just over kill and showing off when you are talking about a rubber boot. Should we just say status symbol for those who love to flaunt it?...you know the type...how petty.
(Is he done?)
Yes. But I would have to say this- I think Rog's adrenaline was pumping! So the only difference for Rog is really that he just didn't have the blood and guts when he was shoe hunting. And of course, that is because he wasn't shoe hunting with one of us- we can get pretty nasty when there is a good deal and only one shoe left in your size- watch out!
Love to you,
Paula

The Rut is Here!
For those of you who are not familiar with hunting, let me explain something. This time of year happens to be the best for deer hunting. It is when the rut is here. Let's just think back to our high school days. Remember when your boyfriend would literally do anything for you even if it meant it would get him killed just to see if he could end up scoring? Totally reminds me of Todd our senior year. The things he would do....OK, back to the rut. This basically is the exact same situation. The doe trots around...the buck frantically searches for her scent, so insanely that he often gets shot in the process totally unaware of his surroundings as he only has one thing on his mind! And if we want to further explain what this may feel like for the shoe hunter, I liken it to Pre-Holiday shopping! Sometimes the deals are so good, it becomes hard concentrating at what the task at hand may be! Forget the kids toys, these shoes are only $19.99 on sale plus 15% off plus a bonus no finance for 3 months! You get what I mean!
So Todd was successful this weekend hunting. He got a "big" doe. He said we needed some venison in the freezer. I was actually pretty happy with chicken, pork, salmon but it will now be full of sausage, hot sticks, back straps, and steaks. Now, if you are a novice venison cook, you could be in for some gamey style meat. I grew up in a house where the venison was "seasoned" with salt and pepper and placed in the oven to cook. Tough. I was surprised to find that it is delicious when prepared correctly. When I finished my shift from the Gas Hut at Fleet Farm in high school, I would stop by Todd's house to find venison steak and cheesy mashed potatoes! These have now become a household favorite with our boys.
There are many ways to season venison steaks but one of our favorites is a recipe we received from our good friend Roger Lemler (besides being a great cook, he is a wonderful home builder!) I thought it would be OK to share this marinade with you...
Red Meat Marinade- 1 cut up onion, 3/4 cup oil, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1.5 tsp garlic powder, 1.5 tsp ground ginger, 3 tbsp honey, and 2 tbsp cider vinegar. Marinate the meat for several hours. I would cook this on the grill.
So I am sure this weekend, we will be having some venison. The deer was gutted and brought to the butcher the same day for processing. Now, let me tell you something- in the process of "gutting", Todd lost his wedding ring. I got notified of this by email today...
Title "Problem"
"lost my wedding ring in deer. Sorry."
My response "hmmmm"
And that is exactly what I thought for a while. Hmmm. I know this has happened to other guys. The ring, in the deer, in the woods. Uh, it's just a ring, cost maybe $50 dollars when we got it. We can get a new one.
Then I realized something. Todd has not taken that ring off once since we were married. I mean not once. In 12+ years, not once. Not once during volleyball when a lot of other guys do. Not once at a pool. not once to shower. not once. not at all. That ring is an amazing symbol of who he is to me. Absolute dedication. Not once when I have yelled at him. Not once while cursing "you did this to me" during the birth of our children. not once during PMS.
And get this. To top it off, the next email I get is this titled "re: problem"
"solved. Doug found it. Owe him $20 for metal detector".
You see, Doug Buechel had that happen to him. He knew what it meant (maybe not the way I see it).
2 great guys. The ring is back. Minus $20 and a case of beer.
Renee Janke said to me at a party this weekend, "hunters are really great guys." Simple statement but she sure is right. And though the hunting seasons may occupy a lot of time, I am lucky to be married to one.
Gotta go, the rut calls.
Peace,
Paula

Socialites
Today, I am happy to say is the start of a 5-day, much needed, vacation from work. I love my job but , boy, do I appreciate the balance.
We woke at 5:30 am. I cannot remember the last time day light savings affected me so much! I just cannot adjust! My boys woke at the same time. I informed Jordan (age 8) that Obama had won. That was followed by his tears (obviously I thought Dad had really gotten to him!) so I told him it was going to be ok. He followed with "No, it won't. Our bus driver told us that if Obama won, the terrorist would come to get us."
I am not kidding. He said that. And, as we all know, he didn't make that up. He also stated his fear he could not hunt with guns anymore, which was told to him by classmates.
What are we doing to our kids? Please, not my child.
So here it was, yes, Obama has won. No, the terrorists are not coming. Yes, you can hunt with guns. It will all be fine. We had our talk, gave our hugs, and he was on his way. I dropped them off at school and prayed for a peaceful day. A quick workout and then off to shop.
I had to stop at the Antique Mall in Kewaskum to cross some things off my list. First was some tables for the basement- found them but not purchased yet. I need to process how this would look. Then off to select a basket for the fundraiser this weekend at the Gonring residence for ALS, the "Not so Perfect Pageant Party"- can't wait! I did find a basket...which was conveniently placed by...shoes! Vintage shoes! *^#*! $3 vintage shoes!!!! Brown faded leather with a bull nose toe, silver/black buckle, thick 2 inch heel. size......8 1/2! Come on...As I tried them on, my foot cramped a little but it was the perfect fit. Yes, I wear a 9 but I am telling you, it is the "not so perfect" perfect fit! So I went to the Pig to do some grocery shopping and had them on right away! I noticed the "Socialites" name brand. I wonder who wore these before me? According to the Internet research, the Socialite brand was sold by the U.S. Shoe company back in the mid 1950s.
So my thoughts have gone mad since I have been thinking about me finding these Socialites shoes. What is the purchase of these shoes trying to tell me? Is it simply as dictionary.com defines a socialite... that I am "one prominent in the fashionable society"? That would make sense, this dnrshoe thing...OR , oh my...is there a reason why my foot cramped when it entered the shoe? is it true? socialism? "A vesting of ownership and control of the means of production in distribution in the community as a whole" OR the Marxist Theory is coming true..."the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism by the imperfect implementation of collective principles". Could it be a sign of things to come?
No, no, no. It is just a pair of shoes.
Remember kids are kids.
Thanks to God for the chance to vote yesterday, no matter who the winner!
Namaste,
Paula

Namaste,
Paula

Wild Side
My husband and I were lucky enought to be part of an event this weekend. It was a Halloween Bash hosted by some families who attend St. Francis Cabrini school. We don't have our children there though I am proud to say I am an alumni. We do attend their Fundraising night in Spring (thanks to the Lemlers) and were a part of a group that helped the school raise over $3000. Wow! Just by bidding on this night...Fright night had arrived.
It was a blast! Todd went as Mr. Clean. I know many of you who know him can totally see that. I went as Mrs. Clean, in a sense. I was actually a French Maid, fish net stockings and all but you can see how that would go together. Other great couple costumes included the Lime and Tequilla bottle, the banana and gorilla, the bottle of Jack Daniels and Coke, the patient with her hind end hanging out and fellow Doctor Harry Fingermaster, lots of priests and nuns, 4 ghostbusters, and a bunch of "pot"heads. And one man who did not really even need to wear a costume because he looked so much like Todd Palin...he was amazingly similair. For a church auction, it was a bit on the wild side! And don't get me wrong, I am certainly not complaining. I enjoyed seeing the outfits but more so the laughter and all out belly rolling that took place throughout the night. I am sure it took a tremendous amount of planning. It sure was a success...well worth the cost of admission.
I am sure you have all said the same...when a hurricane hits, a tornado, a local family with tragedy...we all want to help. It is our human nature to want to help others. Saturday night in the midst of all the fun, money was being given to a wonderful school. A school, though at times I disliked, helped me develop my values. It reflected much of what I feel that Shoe night is about. Yes, you need to get a "costume" (shoes, a jacket, jewlery, etc) but really it's about getting together, laughing out loud, and helping out the community in which one lives. I can't wait to see you there!

Brilliant!
There are so many reasons why I love being a woman. This past weekend brought to light some of them...1. we are often creative when given the time and resources. 2. we can change our minds and still be right and usually better off.
I was happy to take part in 2 girlie gatherings Friday and Saturday. Friday night was the patron license hunters...dare I say this...wet dream! OK, I said it but let me tell you why. Micky S. held this event with purses, jewelry, sunglasses, and shoes for sale...plus Julie B's Tastefully Simple...and the wine, food, and fun to boot! The group was eclectic yet cohesive. We shared ideas and past on stories. Trista came up with this creative and brilliant idea... Party night is Dec 6th. We plan on having things there to raffle/auction. We all have purses at home that we have bought and either never used or have used gently. Why not bring them to the event and have them for sale for $10 or so with all proceeds going to Chix! What a great idea. I went home that night and saw an example of just that sitting in my closet. I can't wait to bring it! And no, it is not my very used purse with the sticker on the front that says "Make out, not war". I did happen to buy a new purse Friday. Despite my children begging me to get the purse organizer on TV for $49.95, I bought a big chunky brown and black one. I love it and will not be giving that one away- thank you Teresa (www.bagtiqueparty.com). There will also be a little something being raffled off at the party from Teresa's never-used bagtique collection!
Saturday was Simply Indulgent. That is the name of the company Julie Craig owns. She makes homemade gourmet chocolates...need I say more! Kelly G. won this day at the Kewaskum Athletic Complex Fundraiser. I, along with Kelly and several other women, spent some time with Julie learning the art of fine chocolate making...peanut butter cups, truffles, chocolate covered cherries, spoons dipped in chocolate. I was in heaven. Oh, and there was good wine too! Kathy, Mrs. VP of the Shoe Hunting Club, came up with a brilliant idea. This idea in place of our prior thought about prizes (that's where the changing minds comes to play) I don't want to completely give it away but for those who are winners of the contests the evening of the shoe party should be very satiated after receiving their prizes! The night was topped off by joining our spouses for a nice dinner and games. Julie is a true talent! She was kind enough to open her home to a few strangers and put forth a tremendous party. We will be honored if her presence is made the night of the event! If you are interested in ordering her chocolate, let me know and I will give you her contact information. Oh and by the way, it's Monday. Just 2 days, barely 48 hours after we left the party. I have 2 pieces left.
So Sunday was my day of rest...well, I just about killed myself cleaning floors in my house and felt like I had aged 30 years over night BUT I am very blessed to say that I ended my day with several hours being spent snuggling with my beautiful boys on the couch just hanging out. And that truly is the absolute best thing about being a woman...I get to be the mom of Jordan and Andrew.
Sweet succeses.

Let the Birds Sing!
Wednesdays are normally my day off from work. Yesterday was an exception. The morning actually went by pretty quickly while it was pouring outside. The last few hours of my work day, however, drained me. Despite clearing skies outside, cancer diagnoses seemed to cloud my afternoon inside. Of course, I am not the one being diagnosed. It is the worst part of my job. I'm amazed at how each person manages the news. By work days end, I almost feel like I do not want to leave. I'm one of those people who likes to leave only when my work is done. I feel today like my work is not even close to being done. On my drive to Cedarburg, I pray.
Wednesday nights, one day per month, is Bunco Night with the girls. Tonight I'm worried it may be hard to transition to this complete night of fun. We planned on starting the night at Morton's (if you've never been there, it is a must). As I come closer to the restaurant, I am greeted with the most awesome flock of singing birds who have gathered in the vines that are growing along the building. I mean this was a jungle! I smile and breathe with ease. You see, months ago I had decided that anytime I had seen a bird who crossed my path or a group a birds that was God's reminder of the women in my life. Here I was being reminded those women diagnosed are strong. I could leave my day job behind for a few hours and enjoy the company of fun and entertaining friends!
Bunco is always educational. The night's conversation involved mostly politics, something I'm currently not a huge fan of! We debated some hot topics. Relationships with significant others. Our kids and their current stages. High school yearbooks came out. Can you say "really big hair"? It was a timely topic however. Next year will be my 20th year reunion. Just this past week a few of my classmates started a website- www.eastandwest89.com- it's been great to see just how fast the "word of mouth by email" is going! Oh...we didn't play bunco (I hope my male counter parts aren't reading this). It totally dismisses anything I wrote about in the "Trap Night" blog entry! But we did try to bring out other games...which we never played. There was just way too much to talk about. For goodness sakes, there is an election just around the corner and we were ready to solve the world's problems! So I would say we did the world some good last night despite not playing bunco. I brought home my $5 which I now will invest in our failing economy.
Thanks girls! The bunco team will be there on Shoe night. And at that party, the theme will be properly played out with lots and lots of cool shoes AND money to help out those people who need support of all kinds with a cancer diagnosis. It could be as simple as listening to singing birds.
Peace.

Save the TaTas
I'm up to my boobs in breasts this month. As you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. In doing my job as a Nurse Practitioner, I know women are very concerned about their risk. I know each of us have been touched by several women in our lives who have been diagnosed. In case you're interested, let me give you some of the facts:
1. You have a 1 in 10 lifetime risk of breast cancer. So take 10 women at the age of 80, 1 of them would have had breast cancer in her life.
2. The average age of diagnosis is 61. This means 50% are less than 61 and 50% more.
3. You are at increased risk if you have a first degree relative (mom, sis, child) who has been diagnosed, you have been on hormones, or you have highly dense breast tissue(called glandular tissue) compared to fat tissue.
4. You can attempt preventing the disease by having your weight controlled, being physically active, limiting your alcohol consumption, not smoking, having a baby before age 30, breast feeding, and avoiding hormone replacement. In some major high risk situations, certain preventative meds or even prophylactic surgery (having the breasts removed) has been done.
5. If the cancer is caught in early stages, you have a 98% five year survival rate.
6. Mammograms are recommended to women 40 years and older. If you are at increased risk, they may be started earlier. MRIs or ultrasounds are also used.
Now it's time for the interactive part of the blog. Do a breast exam! You should do them monthly after your period. How? Sitting/standing up and laying down. Showers or tubs are a great place. Often this is the part the husband has no problem assisting you in. Don't forget every piece of breast tissue including your armpits! I always say that the breast tissue to me feels like cottage cheese and you are looking for a marble, a pea, a pebble in the cottage cheese. Everybodys' boobs feel different so get to know what yours feels like. And remember to just look...no redness, rash or dimpling should be noted. There is a device right now that Curves and Olivia Newton John are promoting called Liv Aid. Mindy, owner of West Bend Curves, introduced me to it. It helps when you do your exam- go to Curves if you are interested. If you just come in and check them out, you get one for free- no need to sign up. They even have something called "Girls Night In", an evening packed full of discussion and entertainment!
We know as women how important those tatas are. Though they certainly don't define who we are (flat, large, flopsy, augmented...), they set us apart. I have found no greater joy than going from a AA cup size to DD in a matter of months to feed my children, engorged one day as all get out, prancing around in front of the mirror imaging Hugh Hefner was going to call me at any minute! Oh, they are gone now but, boy, that was fun while it lasted for the day! And luckily I do not have the boobs like the lady in the National Geographic special- have you seen it? She is naked bending over this pot of rice just stirring away. All of a sudden in back of her comes one of her kids. I SAID FROM THE BACK. He grabs hold of her breast and pulls it behind her to take a drink and she just keeps stirring. Amazing. What was more amazing was this colony she was living in was perfect. She was the master. She had several husbands who did almost everything for her. Hmmmm.
OK, back to breast cancer. Chix for a Cause is a great organization. They help people with all types of cancer. I know they have helped several who have had breast cancer. I remember Peggy Anderson telling me one day that she thought Ty Pennington was coming to her house to build her a new home. In fact, it was the Chix organization surprising her with some much needed cash during her battling days. She is a true survivor by the way.
Which brings me to the Shoe Hunt. I am so excited. I have received several confirmations for the evening which means there will be women out hunting for shoes and accessories very soon! There will be women gathering together, spending some time together, laughing, loving, living. Yeah! It's not about the shoe- height, size, color, cheap....don't matter! See you there!

Hump Day
I love Wednesdays. It's my day off from work. It's amazing to think that after only 2 days of work, I need a day off but it always comes as a relief. I'm shocked by the complete disarray my house is already in. So it usually starts with a lot of straightening up. I get to take the kids to school. Then it's off to the Y for a swim. That's when complete peace sets in. I think it has to do with the breathing I do with each stroke.
I usually head off to the store after that. That is when I am reminded of the wisdom I am surrounded by. You see, Wednesdays are senior citizen discount days, at least in the town of West Bend. They have earned their right to receive an additional 10-15% at each store they enter. Brilliant thinking on the stores part by the way! These ladies are expert shoppers! They find the deals. They go out in packs. They compliment each other on the items and for sure the deals they find. They also hold the gift to buy more than one. If a pair of shoes fit perfectly, buy them in every color. Again, brilliant. Today I parked in one of the last slots at Kohls...on a Wednesday...on October 1st...The store was full of extremely wise shoppers and I was there to learn.
I also cherish the absolute lack of being rushed for time. As I finished my shopping spree, I patiently waited in line as the lady in front of me asked the cashier to wrap each of her candles with paper individually...10 candles...12:28...in 12 minutes I need to be at my son's school to help in math which, if I'm lucky, is 15 minutes away. Sure, take your time. I am in no hurry. I'm reminded of my swim earlier that day...breathe.
We can all learn from this generation- go for the deals, go out in packs, and go for more than one when the fit is perfect! Most importantly, make and take the time. It's worth every breath. And for those of you in that generation, I thank you.
Peace,
Paula

Closet cleaning
As I write you this evening, I am wearing some fuzzy slippers. Yes, it's that time of year. It seems like just yesterday...well, it was just yesterday that the sun was shining and it was 80 degrees. Today it felt like 50 with full cloud cover. I sit here in red PJ's donned with snow flakes and fuzzy slippers. Time to put the sandals away for a few months.
It's also a perfect time to clean out the closet. That is what I spent a great deal of time doing this weekend. During that time I made a huge discovery. I put the summer clothes away. I sorted through to see what my Fall choices were and if they were still in fashion. I really thought i needed some updates- scarves, belts. I thought I needed some staple items- black pants, white shirt. Come to find out, it was like the Loaves and Fishes story from the Bible. The clothes just kept coming and coming. All they need is a little ironing.
The huge discovery was this- I think this is the year to focus on the shoe as the accessory. I can't be wearing staple items and staple shoes at the same time. Something has got to stand out and I am declaring this year it be the shoes.
The tough thing about shoes is that they often go unnoticed. Rightfully, people generally look people right in the face when conversing. And in most situations, pants cover a good portion of the shoes. Maybe this is why I have such a strong desire for the tucked in pant look to come back. I am determined to get some riding boots this year. I think the trend is slowly making a comeback...and hey (this goes out to all those people who know me well)when I set a trend (ie- rolling up jeans, scrungy in the hair) we know how well it takes off! Setting can be much better than following. I try to not be too much of a trend follower. I clearly remember the day when I had my hair spiked up like Billy Idol's, cut off gloves on like Michael Jackson, and tore up jeans like Madonna. Yes, I managed to get out of the house like that past my parents on a day when my St. Francis Cabrini pupils and I would be headed off to church. God is forgiving.
Though I have this true passion for shoes, my true inspiration for this continues to be uniting amazing women together. Life is far too short to stand here just complaining about what we feel should be done and how to do it. For goodness sakes, my husband has already figured out 1/10 of the school year is over- time flies! Let's just do it. If that means having shoes be your accessory this season, OK. If that means helping out a great organization like Chix for A Cause, even greater! And if it means you take the time to hang out with a few friends and spend some quality time together, that's the best!
I wanted to dedicate this post to Jody Goratowski who died September 23rd. She was 38. While here, she was a fantastic RN, a blast to be goofy in the ER with when I was working there, and a real go-getter. This was a woman who remembered detail, who knew names, who told great stories. She even told me what the secret ingredient was in the ChiChi's salsa (and though I know my salsa buddies know what it is, I'm going to keep it a secret). Her giggles were infectious. Her life courageous. Jody, it seems, had no warning of her death. She will be dearly missed. Though, to my knowledge, Jody did not have a shoe fetish, each convertible I now see reminds me of her spirit!
Peace,
Paula

Peace,
Paula

God Spent Just A Little More Time with You!
It's Sunday. Our day of rest. I did not go to church. I love my church, Still Waters in Jackson. We had some family over last night and I went for a walk as the sun rose this morning. That was my reason for not going. I did connect with God though. I seem to always see deer whether it be in my car or while I am walking. I wondered a while ago what that may have meant. Was God trying to tell me something by placing these deer in front of me? Well, I decided the deer was being placed to remind me of God's presence in my life. So, today I saw 3 crossing the road just in front of me as I walked onto County Road by the New Fane trails. What a sight! Yes, God, I know you are in my life!
Deer stories are great...well, sometimes! I know all of you who are married or around deer hunters can relate. Like yesterday as I sat around the ball diamond in Beechwood watching my husband play softball. There were times while there that I would be talking with my husband...then another man would appear...the conversation would slowly change to allow the third party to participate in the conversation...before you know it a deer story was being told! And now rather than me being part of the conversation, my vocabulary suddenly decreased to that of an infant, "uh-huh...wow...oh..."
You see, women, on average, use 20,000 words per day, while a man uses about 7,000 (Brizendine, 2006). We have bigger communication centers in our brains. So why is it that when around a group of men we often become wordless? We have plenty of things to talk about!
I am impressed with my husband's ability to tell a story. He truly is brilliant at remembering the details and reciting them. A story of his, and this is not a cut on him at all, can last as long as the actual event . And I really don't mean that as a cut. I know I have to repeat that because if he is reading this I don't mean to offend. I really admire him. I am amazed at the details. Honestly, I either can't remember the details or feel that I should speed through the story for fear the other person may not be interested in what I am saying. But he, and Todd Jr. (who is my son Jordan) has been blessed with this ability. Story telling is almost a lost art. People are so busy with their lives, sometimes they feel they don't have the time. God spent just a little more time with Todd and Jordan on this gift. And I thank Him for that!
Now Ladies, I know we have a lot to say. I think it may be 2 things that prevent us from dominating a conversation...1) the busy thing, 2)the common interest thing (besides our children). I say let the common interest thing disappear! Anytime you hear a deer story, retort with an equally detailed and exciting shopping story. Yes, yes, yes, while this may sound shallow it may save you the anguish you feel just standing there saying nothing at all. So now it will be..."wow! I had that happen to! I was really having a hard time finding the right exact rack. Then there it was in the distance, about 20 yards away. There was actually a group of them. It took sometime to decide which one I should focus in on. And then I knew. The red shoes, size 9, stiletto heels. With a flash of my card , they were mine. Here, I'll show you. I've got a picture..."
Let the shoe hunting begin. The tip of the week- Scout. Make sure prior to a big hunt that you have prepared. This may take several trips to various stores, websites, magazines, newspaper flyers before you can actually locate the place to go. While this may not guarantee success, it's something else you can talk about!
Enjoy your Sunday! Hey, I would love to hear from you...What did God spend just a little more time with you on, or your husband, or your kids? Click on comments and let me know!
I'm trying to remember the singer of that song...James?..."God spent just a little more time with you, babe!"

Satisfaction
You know they really are a classic, the sandal. I know they have been around since the time of Jesus according to pictures I've seen. It's no wonder why you Ladies voted them #1 on the shoe poll of favorite shoes.
I love things that are classic and leave a message even when the inventor is long gone. I've often thought of what I will leave as a legacy for my kids and those who know me. I haven't quite figured it out but guess it has something to do with using a creative touch to get a fullness in life. Rather then pouting about my husband's hunting obsession and rather than joining him (I typically even let a fly go intact from the house rather than spat it with a swatter), I used my creative side to come up with a logical alternative- shoe hunting.
There are so many creative people out there I admire. This weekend, I watched "Shine A Light", a documentary done by Martin Scorsese about the Rolling Stones. This band formed in 1962 and continues to come out with albums, 24 total so far. Despite being in their 60s, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards act like they did in concert as they did years ago 9 though Mick does seem to be a bit winded at times). Their rock, jazz, and blues exotic sound transcends. Brown sugar, Start Me Up, Satisfaction...hm mm. True classic rock and roll. And those lips!
Now don't get me wrong. I know they have had bumps along the way. OK, not bumps, mountains. It sounds like there have been band members along the way who have left the band for not being recognized for a lot of the writing that has been done. There was even a band member early on who left the band under difficult circumstances only to be found one month later dead in the bottom of a pool. And then there are the drugs. Keith Richards, don't know him but certainly appears effected by long term use. I love that Johnny Depp uses Richard's personality for his Pirates of the Caribbean character, so perfect! And I am sure the list does go on. I certainly have never followed them closely enough to know all the details.
Despite the bumps, these guys are such a part of music, and for me, I love music of all kinds. I guess part of it is because of that creativity. There is such a story being told in the music. I love really knowing the words, not just singing them but knowing the story behind them. The Stones don't have to worry about what legacy they will leave.
There are several things I still have to consider in leaving my legacy. I have to live long enough for one to be created. I hope 37 years is not the end. I also would like for it to be somewhat classic or original. It's like the grilled cheese sandwich I had today. Panera may have some of the best sandwiches there are right now, but sometimes a good old fashioned grill cheese is all you need. So for now, I will continue to work my creative side.
And absolutely I agree with all of those people who left the band because of not being recognized for their work. I don't want the same to happen with my hunting members. I had so much help and so much of this creativity couldn't be done without people like Kathy B, Shelly W, Steph K, Jill W, and Chix...and all of you!
Let's get ready to be creative. Going out hunting for shoes with your friends. Sharing your stories. Gathering on the big night to show off your kill. Giving to a great organization like Chix for A Cause. Thanks in advance for your generosity.

Paula

The Real Trap Night
Today I have on these heels I bought from Elder Beerman which is now a Boston Store in West Bend. I love the cork style heels. They are full of colored paisleys. I usually like to wear them with my "Save the Ta Tas" shirt. The 2 together make quite the statement. Finished off with jeans. I love jeans and heels, is that wrong?
So, with the short time I have before I go pick up the kids from school I wanted to educate you for a little bit. Have you heard of trap night? Well, let me explain this. I am sure most of you have and it usually goes a little something like this..."Honey, how 'bout going to dinner and a movie tonight?"..."No, dear, I have Trap tonight. I won't be home until late."
OK, now let's break this down into some definitions. Trap-(according to how I heard it explained to me) A person takes his gun. He lines up with 5 other men in a straight line. There is one person behind them that sets off the trap which is this disc that flies up into the air. One of the guys shoots at it. Once the line of people has a turn, they rotate. They rotate a total of 5 times. Basically a total of 25 shots are made.
Now let's define "tonight" because as the person said who could not go to dinner and the movie, because of trap "tonight". Tonight- a period of time when the sun sets, most commonly anytime after 5ish. And when you talk about a night of activities, it usually refers to sometime around 5 until 12ish. OK, so now put that definition with trap. Guess how long a round of trap takes?
15 minutes
So for any of you who are made to believe this trap thing takes all night, No. It is the stories, the eating, drinking, hanging out and there happens to be 15 minutes of Trap. I really think the name has got to change.
So how am I so privileged to know these things? I went to the Turket Shoot this weekend. And you see now ,Ladies, why I come up with nights out that involves girly things? Don't get me wrong, I truly would not change my life for the world. I just want to make sure I continue to bring into my life the things that inspire me to be me. And to stay connected with you.
Peace,
Paula

Gotta Have Some Heels
I've decided that each time I blog I am going to wear one of my favorite pair of shoes. Tonight it's a pair of gray flip flops I bought at Kohls. Why are they a favorite? 1. They were clearanced 2. They have this cute little bow across the front. 3. I don't own another pair of gray shoes and, right now, I really like wearing silver jewerly and find the 2 go quite nicely together. What I have neglected to say is that if I wear these shoes for too long I get this discomfort along the tops of my feet BUT not enough to not wear them. Sometimes the sacrifice is worth it when it finishes off an outfit.
Flip flops are certainly not my best pair. I actually prefer heels. I haven't figured out why. I think it is because back in high school I use to play basketball. I was on Varsity my sophmore year. I remember seeing my stats on the roster- 5'9. I was a point guard. It was not until I was about 25 getting a real adult physical when they measured me. 5'6 and 1/2? That has got to be wrong! I totally thought until that point I was 5'9. No one around me had ever discussed my height. I actually had always been told I was tall. What happened? Well, turns out they lied on the roster. So now I am back to 5'9 with a little help! But not playing basketball in 'em.
It's already started by the way... Hunting. (Please, anytime you refer to the animal hunting say it like Seinfeld use to say "Neuman") Gini and Kathy are husbandless for a few days as of today. Their men went off to Colorado to Elk hunt. My husband got his turkey tag in the mail today. He was out practice shooting the bow in the yard. Even my 2 young boys are into it. There was a rabbit in my garden this morning. No sooner did they tell me, I see them both out there taking aim (miss again!). Thankfully that helps fuel my energy, like it needs fueling! So tonight the girls went out (our team has been formed!) and we have set our own date to go out hunting. It sounds like we are all in for the full patrons. We are expert and expect to have full tags by days end.
That's a lot of what this is all about. Get those groups formed! Or go it alone BUT make sure you call your co-hunters and chat about scouting, hunting, a good sale, rack...clearance! Remember our best call is not the grunt call or the doe in heat call but rather the cell phone call. Our season hasn't started yet but it seems like just days away.
Hunting tip of the week- if at all possible, try to be a size 6 or 6 and 1/2. They seem to get all the clearanced deals!

Back to School
I just tucked my boys in bed. It is the night before their first day back to school. There sure was excitement tonight as we went through the information sheets that were given to us at open house and reviewed the student handbook of rules. My husband has also turned in early as tomorrow he will return to his teachings to Mayville school second graders for, what I believe is, his 15th year.
It just reminds me there are so many rules. Yes, rules are needed, even for shoe hunting! I'm not sure just how many of you who will be participating in the Shoe hunt event have ever read through the Wisconsin Deer Hunting Regulations??? This year's cover features Leah Durkin with 2 deer that she shot 3 minutes apart in the 2003 season. Impressive...though I do recall last year's amazing hunt that Ronda Lichtensteiger's told of her 2-shoe story. I would bet she beat the time of 3 minutes in between each "kill". She also walked away with the "Best Deal" award. The 2 shoe total (yeah, sit down for this) $7 and some change!
So this deer rule book is 55 pages long, comes in 3 different languages, and features a special section on chronic wasting disease. It makes me wonder, was the DNR shoe application too easy last year? Should we come up with a "diet" section this year? No. As a matter of fact, we know we would like to keep it simple. The Shoe Patron Special Permit Instructions and license have been modified this year. It still resembles our counter parts and will be available soon.
The great things are the new additions. A Patron License is available per last year's request. What is a Patron's license you ask? When it comes to deer hunting if you have one of these it means you can also hunt for other things such as fowl and varmits. Well, we all like shoe hunting but...we also like purse hunting, accessory hunting, outfit hunting. You bet! I know when you become an expert in one thing you should expand your horizens. Go wild!
We also are including out of state hunting. This after last year's almost devastating hunt by Jennifer George. She was almost eliminated from the competition when it was found her hunting took place in Georgia and not in Wisconsin. Luckily her selection was so perfectionistic that they had to be included. So thank Jen for that one!
And lastly, the internet. After learning that deer mounts are purchased on the internet, we thought we would let this slide. Especially when I found the most perfect one and the shoes are not available in this area. The site www.ohdeershoes.com. No kinding- there is a style of shoes titled that! Apparantly these shoes are very comfortable and have terrific style. So check it out!
In the next coming weeks you should be getting a mailing with all the rules.
This is a great opportunity to take some time out for yourself and gather with family and friends in the process. The football season officially starts this week. My son already has his Christmas list made out. And after going to Harley Owners Association at Miller park with ill-fitting shoes and falling flat on my face, I know the time is here! It's time for to scout for new shoes- get out there and go!

It's just around the Corner!
I can't believe it! Just one year ago, almost to the day, a bunch of girls were out celebrating Kelly Goeden's birthday. We were dreading the upcoming season. Summer was coming to an end. And a beautiful Fall was nearing. Yes, I love fall - the colors, the freshness of the air, the crisp cool nights... BUT it also is the season of hunting. The season where I and the rest of the girls I know are literally left behind for several months while our husbands go out for hours at a time to "gather". Their minds are elsewhere. I'll give you a great example and maybe those of you who don't know me might be finding out a bit too much right off the bat but here goes...not too long ago, my husband and I were in our bedroom. I was putting away some clothes. He was just hanging out. He looked over at me with "the look". I knew what he wanted and for some reason was going to give in when all of a sudden out of the corner of his eye he saw something out our window. "Oh look! A deer! Wow, nice size...I wonder were it is headed...oh, man I think he is going across the street to Geidels. I should call Jeff to let him know. He has fixed up some of his land..." THAT WAS IT! As easy as that...for a man to actually walk away from what may have been one of his easiest chances to have sex since our children have come along and all it took was this deer trotting past our window. Hmmmm...Maybe I should purchase one of those statue deer that I can strategically place outside our window every so often!
Well, anyway! Back to what really matters here. The girls came up with a great idea. We hunt. Girls hunt too. And yes, that can be taken literally but I mean we are good hunters in another sense. SHOES! What girl doesn't like LOVE a new pair of shoes. So that is what we decided. The girls should get together and go hunt for that perfect pair of shoes... And then show them off at a party...But the party should be for charity. NO you don't give your shoes to charity. You wear your shoes and bring some money to get into the party. The Charity being Chix for a Cause. The party being at Imagine Coffee House. It snowed like crazy last year but the turnout was still great. This year we are doing it again!
I wanted to get the blogspot going. I'm going to blog throughout this season so I hope you check here often. I love to write and this is a great outlet for me. I will be continually updated the blog as I learn how. If you wish to goto last year's blog check it out at www.dnrshoes7463-911.blogspot.com. As you can see, the name was lengthy, I wanted to simplify as I do with many things in my life.
I am so excited to share this experience with you. I hope you find it as rewarding and amazing as I do. I guess that's what a hunter's life is all about!
